Hagen Fellowship Announcement – Apply by October 23, 2023

Please see the information below regarding the USC Rossier Hagen Women’s Leadership Fellowship:

Funded by the Veronica and David Hagen Chair in Women’s Leadership, this program aims to increase access to professional development, networking, and mentors for women in Rossier EdD programs through participation in academic and professional conferences.

Women leaders enrolled in one of Rossier’s Doctorate in Education (EdD) programs may apply for the fellowship, which will fund attendance at a conference to take place in the 2023-24 academic year. The conference can be professional or academic, and should provide an opportunity for the participant to showcase their leadership roles and skills. Six to nine doctoral students will be funded $1000 to $1500 each through a competitive application process; funding awards will vary depending on whether fellows will be presenting at the conference or attending.

To apply, please complete the application and write 2 essays of no more than 400 words each. The deadline for applications is Monday, October 23, 2023. Applicants must be enrolled in Rossier EdD program courses at the time of application.

Participants will be selected by an alumni panel of graduates from the Educational Leadership, Organizational Change and Leadership and Global Executive EdD programs. Applications will be reviewed and awarded early in the fall semester and funding must be spent by the following June. Please contact Professor Tracy Poon Tambascia (tpoon@usc.edu) if you have questions.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Why is this Fellowship being offered?

Despite gains in educational attainment, women remain underrepresented in leadership roles in government, industry and education (Pew Research, 2021). For example, women CEO’s of Fortune 500 companies reached its peak in 2020 with 7%; in the US there have only been 44 women governors in 30 states; and only one-quarter of Senators are women (Pew Research, 2021). For many years, the lack of a qualified pipeline was blamed for the low number of women in leadership positions, but a 2017 report from the American Council on Education (ACE Higher Education Spotlight, 2017) noted that women have been well represented in the attainment of baccalaureate degrees for the past 30 years, and half of all doctoral degrees since 2006. In academia, women held less than one-third of full professorships in 2015, and in 2017 they held less than one-third of college or university presidencies (ACE Leading the Way to Parity, 2017). Just over 25% of women lead school districts as superintendents in the US (Hechinger Report, 2020).

Even with modest gains over time, gender parity and women’s access to senior leadership roles remains a challenge. More direct action and support is needed. Though this program is only a small part of what is needed to strengthen the pathway to senior leadership roles for women, it is an important step in this journey. Fellows will not only benefit from the program, but become part of a community of mentors and supporters for other women.

Other important information

Students will be reimbursed after the conference, usually for conference registration, travel, lodging, or per diem up to the amount of the fellowship total. USC travel policies will apply to all reimbursements.  Receipts will be required for reimbursement up to the amount of the grant from this program. Funding will be available each academic year, and EdD students can reapply if their initial request was not accepted.

After the conference, fellows will be asked to share an abstract of their presentation or brief summary of what they learned at the conference, and will be featured on a Hagen leadership website. Fellows will also be asked to review applications in subsequent funding cycles and to mentor rising women leaders in professional settings.

Annual ASU GSV Scholarship Opportunity

Dear OCL Students:

Each year, USC hosts a program for graduate students at ASU GSV – the largest gathering of education innovators (https://www.asugsvsummit.com/).  The program brings together students from Harvard, Stanford, Penn, and of course USC.  Each year, we are able (through a donor) to offer some limited scholarships. We will have very few that cover registration and hotel, and several more that just cover registration (which is $3,500). If you work in K12, higher education or corporate training, this conference could be very interesting.

If you are interested in applying, please send a 1-page essay explaining why you want to attend and how attendance fits in either with your professional and/or academic work. Send emails to Doug Lynch (douglael@usc.edu) by October 15.  Preference will be given to students who are farther in the program (as this is offered yearly). A group of faculty will then review the essays and let you know if they are able to offer a scholarship.  In the email that submits the essay please note your cohort # and whether you are interested in the full scholarship or just the waived registration.

Please direct all questions to Doug Lynch (douglael@usc.edu) or the EdD Program Office (rsoeedd@rossier.usc.edu).

OCL Student Facebook Post Regarding the Dissertation

Hello OCL students.

It has come to our attention that there was a post on the OCL student Facebook page regarding the OCL dissertation requirement, and we wanted to reach out to clear up any potential confusion and misinformation.

As part of our own ongoing efforts to continuously improve Rossier programs, we work to revise courses and dissertation processes on a semester-by-semester basis, and we also undergo regular program-wide reviews and revisions to be sure that the education we offer our students is current and relevant. We are currently undergoing a program-wide review for OCL and will be revising the program; any changes we make to the program will not go into effect until a couple years from now at the very earliest and will not affect any students who are currently enrolled. In fact, we have only just begun this process, and a revision committee was just convened a couple months ago.

As part of our discussions, we have discussed how to strengthen our approach to the dissertation and the products that are produced as part of the process, including primary research, literature review, and implementation plans. We are open to the possibility of adjusting the final dissertation product to maximize its relevance for our students and their fields– much like many PhD and EdD programs across the nation have begun to do over the last 5-10 years. But, the core dissertation components – in terms of original research, literature synthesis, data analysis and interpretation, and recommendations for practice –are expected to remain in place.

We also want to address what was mentioned on Facebook regarding the primary impetus for doing this- that students are not passing. This is simply not true. There are many reasons for undergoing a program review; the first and foremost reason is to ensure we are delivering the best education possible for our students. We generally try to undergo a more comprehensive program review and revision every 4-5 years so that we can ensure we are current, relevant, and also remain on the cutting edge when it comes to delivering content for our students. We also want any assessments we use – dissertation or otherwise – to be authentic and meaningful.

We are in the very early stages of discussing potential revisions and have nothing definitive to share at this time, but we also want to let you know that part of our revision process includes seeking feedback from multiple stakeholder groups throughout the process.

Sincerely,

OCL Governance Committee
