{"id":686,"date":"2018-09-28T16:52:06","date_gmt":"2018-09-28T23:52:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/students.rossier.usc.edu\/edl\/?p=686"},"modified":"2019-08-09T16:58:21","modified_gmt":"2019-08-09T23:58:21","slug":"important-message-from-president-austin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/students.rossier.usc.edu\/edl\/important-message-from-president-austin\/","title":{"rendered":"Important message from President Austin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dear USC students,<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The university is committed to maintaining a safe environment for you.\u00a0 Our department of public safety (DPS)\u2014one of the very best in the nation\u2014works around the clock to ensure your wellbeing.\u00a0 However, as DPS reminds us all: safety is a shared responsibility.\u00a0 This means looking out for yourselves, and for each other, especially when those around you are putting themselves at risk.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The website\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/safety.usc.edu\">http:\/\/safety.usc.edu<\/a> provides detailed information about safety at USC.\u00a0 I encourage you to visit this site, to download the free mobile safety app LiveSafe, and to familiarize yourself with USC\u2019s resources and safety tips.\u00a0 A few specific reminders are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Be aware of your surroundings: if something doesn\u2019t feel right, it probably isn\u2019t.<\/li>\n<li>If you see something, say something.\u00a0 Don\u2019t hesitate to contact DPS. \u00a0Program DPS\u2019s phone numbers into your phone, and familiarize yourself with the emergency phones, both on and off campus.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t walk alone off campus after dark.\u00a0 Take advantage of Campus Cruiser or Lyft, or use the safe-walk feature in the LiveSafe mobile safety app.<\/li>\n<li>Be aware that intoxicated or distracted individuals are more vulnerable to crimes or injuries.\u00a0 Being on a phone or wearing headphones can diminish your personal safety awareness.<\/li>\n<li>If you or someone around you needs help dealing with life changes, anxiety or depression, or other personal issues, reach out to the Counseling and Mental Health team in USC Student Health.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The contact information for the resources above can be found at <a href=\"http:\/\/safety.usc.edu\">http:\/\/safety.usc.edu<\/a> or on the attached list.\u00a0 Keep it handy!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We all benefit from living in one of the largest and most dynamic cities in the world, but it also requires that we proactively exercise good judgement. \u00a0Please take an active role in ensuring your own safety\u2014and the safety of those around you.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Fight On!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Wanda M.
