Compromised information may include names, social security numbers, birth dates, addresses, and some driver\u2019s license numbers, as well as about 209,000 credit card numbers and about 182,000 dispute documents that may include personally identifiable information.<\/p>\n<p>The Office of the Chief Information Security Officer would like to share the following tips on how to protect yourselves:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Assume you are affected.<\/strong>\u00a0Equifax and other credit reporting companies can collect information about you from credit card companies, banks, or other financial institutions without your knowledge.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Freeze your credit reports<\/strong>\u00a0with all three major credit reporting companies: Experian, TransUnion, and Equifax. Visit the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.proofpoint.com\/v2\/url?u=https-3A__www.consumer.ftc.gov_articles_0497-2Dcredit-2Dfreeze-2Dfaqs&amp;d=DwMF-g&amp;c=clK7kQUTWtAVEOVIgvi0NU5BOUHhpN0H8p7CSfnc_gI&amp;r=cVlI2oGRVLIRV-0DkosPrUDm3FiPSncp8yn8O60D3Yc&amp;m=-EFHX6GxcXYWsOzaM2P3Ljhs3uLHbh44JOMJXeG7flM&amp;s=KbI8jQBFyjz43-Hd3L2DaQwElHcwIVziP41IkrZ7Q5A&amp;e=\">Federal Trade Commission\u2019s Credit Freeze FAQ<\/a>\u00a0page for guidance on how to freeze your credit.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Set fraud alerts<\/strong>\u00a0with all three agencies. Consider checking your credit rating regularly by asking for free credit reports from your bank or other credit service companies. Please note that while Equifax is offering free credit monitoring for those affected by this breach, there are reports (not confirmed by USC) that you may be opting out of your ability to join any class action lawsuits against the company if you sign up for Equifax\u2019s credit monitoring.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Be aware of tax return fraud<\/strong>. Criminals sometimes use stolen social security numbers and other personal information to file fraudulent tax returns and redirect tax refunds to their own accounts.
