Mindful USC Spring Sessions

A message from

Varun Soni, Ph.D.

Vice Provost, Office of Campus Wellness and Crisis Intervention

Dean, Office of Religious and Spiritual Life

USC is an inspiring place to teach and learn, but amid the constant whirlwind of activity and information, it can be challenging to feel fully present in our lives and in our work. As a way of proactively creating a culture of well-being on campus, we launched Mindful USC six years ago as a secular, university-wide initiative focused on positive health outcomes and learning experiences for our university community, especially in terms of stress reduction, workplace happiness, emotional intelligence, and artistic expression. Indeed, research studies have shown that mindfulness practices help us to be aware of ourselves in ways that increase attentiveness in the classroom, deepen the quality of teaching and learning, encourage creativity and innovation, and improve our ability to collaborate effectively.

Accordingly, Mindful USC offers free mindfulness courses for students, faculty, and staff, and since its inception, more than 6,000 members of our university community have taken a mindfulness course on campus. The overwhelming majority of participants report significant improvements in terms of addressing stress and anxiety, and in developing more meaningful interpersonal relationships.

This semester, we are pleased to offer two sessions of the popular courses Mindfulness Lab, Mindful Creativity, Mindful Writing, Mindful Parenting, and Mindful Self-Compassion. We are also pleased to offer two additional well-being courses: Click! (cultivating healthy friendships and relationships) and Sleep (developing healthy sleeping habits and perspectives). The first session starts on January 27th and the second session begins on March 23rd.

If you are interested in taking any of these free courses on campus, please visit the Mindful USC website as enrollment is open now. If you would like to take a course at the Health Science Campus, please enroll on the Health Science Campus registration page. And we encourage everyone to download our free Mindful USC app, which offers guided meditations and other mindfulness resources.

Distributing Dissertation Student to EDL Students

Message from current Ed.D. (OCL) student:

My data collection window is almost coming to an end, so I thought I would do one last push for participants!
For my dissertation, I am seeking to understand K-12 administrators’ perceptions, facilitators, and barriers in implementing trauma-informed practices at their school sites.
If you are a current K-12 principal/head administrator (or know one!), residing in the United States, I would appreciate your willingness to complete a brief survey.
The survey is administered via an anonymous Qualtrics link, and takes about 10-15 minutes to complete. It is open to all principals (or equivalent) of schools serving K-12 students.
Please feel free to share this post/link with your networks. The information gathered in this study will hopefully serve as a foundation to the development of practical strategies for improving student achievement among trauma-exposed students.
Thank you in advance!

Families, friends, and pets are always welcome, and more details are here: https://www.hikespeak.com/trails/glendale-peak-mount-hollywood-loop-griffith-park/

Dissertation Skills Academic Support Group

The Kortschak Center for Learning and Creativity is excited to announce the Dissertation Skills Academic Support Group! This group is designed to provide skills, as well as support & discussion, around the common challenges in the dissertation process. At the beginning of each session group members will discuss their progress on their research, writing, general life tasks, & personal goals. Members share experiences, suggestions, insights, & perspectives with each other. Each group meeting will have a general theme (e.g. procrastination; time management, organization) about which we will discuss skills, strategies, and resources. During the end of each group meeting, members will outline & share goals for the upcoming week. Returning group members can have a space to keep themselves accountable by checking in on their goals set in previous group meetings.

This is an open group and students are welcome to attend as many group sessions as they would like. No RSVP needed! Meetings will be held in room 302 of Verna and Peter Dauterive Hall (VPD) and will take place every other Wednesday and Thursday on the following dates:
